Sort Code Checker
More of us are using automated payments, whether that means making an internet payment via our online banking or using a Direct Debit to pay a regular bill. It is increasingly important that we are able to make automated payments smoothly and efficiently.
To help achieve this, the Payments Council has created a Sort Code Checker – which acts as a one-stop-shop for the payments industry.
The Sort Code Checker is an online resource that lets you check that the sort code you are sending a payment to can receive Faster Payments, Bacs Credits and CHAPS Payments, as well as confirm that you can set up a Direct Debit instruction on your account*, and whether you can clear a cheque or pay a paper credit to that account through the cheque & credit clearing.
The Sort Code Checker uses the latest industry data, which is updated weekly, in line with industry practice.
Why up-to-date sort code data is important
The sort code data used by the UK payments industry is updated constantly to reflect bank and other financial institution changes. The pace of change is quicker now, driven in particular by the increased use of online banking, and the new Faster Payments Service. Using data which is out of date can cause inconvenience to customers - their payment might be delayed or not processed - and it places a cost burden on businesses, individuals and banks as they rectify the problems which can arise.
In keeping with the Payments Council’s commitment to ensuring payment efficiency, the Sort Code Checker has been developed to help all customers and is for the use of personal and corporate customers.
The Payments Council has also introduced a best practice recommending businesses and banks refresh their reference data weekly; whilst smaller businesses should ensure their data is updated at the very least on a monthly basis.
The Extended Industry Sorting Code Directory (EISCD)
The EISCD is a comprehensive database of payments-related information for financial institutions participating in the UK Payment Schemes: Bacs, CHAPS, Faster Payments and Cheque and Credit Clearing. The EISCD is updated weekly, and is available on a subscription basis from VocaLink. More details regarding the EISCD can be found by visiting Vocalink’s website.
The Sort Code Checker is provided for informational purposes only. Whilst every effort is made to provide accurate data, users acknowledge that UK Payments accepts no liability whatsoever with respect to its accuracy.
*Some types of savings & investment accounts cannot accept Direct Debit instructions, for more information regarding individual accounts, we recommend that you speak to your bank or building society.
Only your bank can confirm the services that are available to you. If you are making an important payment, which is time critical, we recommend that you speak to your bank first to confirm the services on offer to you.
Individual sort codes are allocated by members of the UK payment schemes (Bacs, CHAPS, Faster Payments and Cheque and Credit Clearing) to those financial institutions that participate in one or more of the Schemes.
