Payments Council comments on the Treasury Select Committee's inquiry into cheque closure decision

We welcome the opportunity to participate in the Treasury Select Committee's inquiry into the Payments Council decision to set a target date of 2018 for closing the UK's central cheque clearing. Consultation and transparency have been integral to the process leading up to the decision and will continue to be until a final decision is made in 2016. This inquiry provides a welcome opportunity to extend the public engagement as part of this important process. We have consulted widely with all types of cheque users to understand what needs to be done either to promote or enhance existing alternatives or identify gaps where new developments may be required; in addition to submitting our own evidence, we look forward to seeing the submissions of other organisations to ensure the needs of specific groups of users are supported through any change
