Council, the organisation that sets strategy for UK payments, is inviting companies that could potentially develop a common infrastructure platform for mobile payments, to respond to a formal Request for Information. Interested parties can obtain further detail on the submission process from http://www.paymentscouncil.org.uk/resources/request_information
This is the first step being taken on the back of the Payments Council's National Payment Plan. It identified that mobile payments are considered to be an important area for possible future innovation and one where the Payments Council could help support open access and interoperability.
The Payments Council intends to use the RFI to map out the scope and scale of work required to develop mobile payments in the UK, alongside the practicalities of delivering standards-based m-payment services in the UK in context of European and global initiatives. Companies submitting RFIs may ultimately be invited to tender to work on any collaborative project.

NOTES TO EDITORS
Payments Council
The Payments Council, which was created in March 2007, is the organisation that sets strategy for UK payments. It has three core objectives:
1. to lead the future development of co-operative payment services in the UK in order to ensure that the payment system as a whole meets the needs of payment service providers, users and the wider economy;
2. to ensure that the payment system is open, accountable and transparent; and
3. to ensure the operational efficiency, effectiveness and integrity of payment services in the UK.
The Payments Council Board comprises 11 directors from organisations that are members of the Payments Council, alongside four independent directors and the Bank of England as an observer. It is chaired by an independent chairman, Brian Pomeroy.
